After a successful premiere week, new girls camp movie “Once I Was a Beehive” will set up camp at theaters in Idaho and Arizona this September.
The Utah-made film will debut in Boise and Idaho Falls, Idaho, beginning Sept. 11 and in Mesa, Arizona, starting Sept. 18. “Once I Was a Beehive,” which opened in Utah on Aug. 14, will also stick around for a second week in 19 theaters throughout the state, opening Aug. 21 in two more Utah locations.
“Once I Was a Beehive” tells the story of a non-LDS teenager who attends girls camp with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The characters in the film band together through stressful experiences to learn lessons about faith and friendship.
The film received several positive reviews from local news outlets, including the Deseret News, the Salt Lake Tribune and Salt Lake City Weekly.
“’Once I Was a Beehive’ is a pleasant surprise that benefits from some strong casting and a smart perspective,” wrote Josh Terry in the Deseret News.
Neon Trees bass player Branden Campbell posted about the movie on his Instagram account, writing "it was so funny, honest and pulls at the heart string."
“The response has truly been more than we could have ever hoped for,” said writer and director Maclain Nelson in a news release. Nelson also starred in 2013’s “The Saratov Approach.”
