WEST VALLEY CITY — A toddler died after being hit by a car Tuesday afternoon near 2700 South and 2900 West.

West Valley police said the mother of 19-month-old Grayson Gavin came home around 5 p.m. with the boy in the car. Grayson unbuckled his car seat and got out of the car while his mother went to open the front door of the home to put groceries inside.

Another driver, who was backing out of a nearby driveway, did not see Grayson and hit him in the roadway, according to investigators. Grayson was transported to a hospital in extremely critical condition and later died.

The driver who hit the boy has been cooperating with the investigation, West Valley police reported on Twitter. A major accident investigation team was dispatched to the scene to reconstruct what happened.

Neighbor Kaitlynn Collins called Grayson's death "heartbreaking" and "absolutely devastating to the neighborhood."

"That little boy that lived here, he's friends with a bunch of the little kids in the neighborhood," Collins said.
