Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence traded barbs from Longwood University in the first and only vice presidential debate Tuesday night, with both candidates working to further their campaign’s chances of succeeding come November. CBS correspondent Elaine Quijano moderated the event.

As early reviews explained, Pence had a strong showing during the debate, mostly defeating Kaine in the one-on-one event. Kaine, meanwhile, focused his responses and comments on attacking Trump, putting pressure on Pence to defend his running mate.

It was a fairly heated contest, which surprised tweeters and critics on Tuesday night since both Kaine and Pence had been stereotyped and pegged as milquetoast and flat candidates, The Daily Beast reported.

“It was supposed to be a battle of the nice guys,” according to The Daily Beast.

But the event featured some highlights and comedic moments that Twitter did well to share with people across America.

Many tweeters thought Pence did well.

And Twitter just couldn’t handle the candidates talking over each other.

Reporters and critics were quick to point out all the dad jokes, too.

A few tweeters felt that Pence set the stage for a potential 2020 presidential run.

Others poked fun at the vice presidential candidates since, well, there wasn’t much else to talk about.

Seriously. Some on social media thought the debate dragged on.

It wasn’t until the end of the event that some thought good policy discussion came.

So, to sum up ...
