MOAB — The driver of an SUV was killed after being hit head-on by a semitrailer while trying to pass a slower moving vehicle, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

About 8:35 p.m. Tuesday, a Dodge Durango was behind a semitrailer on state Route 191.

"The Durango went out around the slower traveling semi and drifted over too far … striking a semitruck head on," according to the UHP.

The driver of the Durango was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was flown by medical helicopter to a hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado. The name of the driver was not immediately released pending notification of family members.

The semitrailer driver suffered minor injures.
