Letter: Police brutality?

In response to Nanette Wride and to Utahns Against Police Brutality:

If Jose Garcia-Jauregui is a victim of police brutality, that means that when police (or citizens) are shot at, police cannot and should not shoot back. That makes not only police officers but all of us less safe.

If Mr. Garcia is a victim of police brutality, that means we should not care whether it's the police or those who shoot at them who are able to go home safe to their families following such encounters.

If we say that Mr. Garcia is a victim of police brutality, that cheapens the sacrifices of every officer who has ever been hurt or killed in the line of duty.

I'm not willing to sacrifice public safety in general. As the son of a career law enforcement officer, I do care whether police or those who shoot at them are the ones who are able to go home safe to their families. I will not cheapen the sacrifice of every officer who's ever been hurt or killed in the line of duty by calling Mr. Garcia a “victim of police brutality.”
