After being drafted by the Utah Jazz in 1983, Thurl Bailey found himself immersed in a different culture from the one he experienced growing up near Washington, D.C. But Bailey quickly grew to love the people of Salt Lake City.
In a recent interview with the Mormon Channel, Bailey shares stories from his childhood, reflections on playing in the NBA and details about his conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
"People would give me different gifts and stuff at different events, and it'd be wrapped up, and I'd go home and unwrap it, and I think I ended up with 65, 70 Book of Mormons in my library," Bailey said. "I'd open it up, and they'd have just a nice scripture in it, and then they'd sign it. So during that time, my rookie season, I was getting more autographs than (I was) giving."
