WEST VALLEY CITY — Police have identified a man who died after he was shot in an altercation with a man in a vehicle while he was riding his longboard here Saturday.
Maluolefale Toala, 30, was riding his longboard north on 5600 West Saturday when he came upon a pickup stopped at the 3500 South intersection about 2 p.m.
There, an argument occurred, and a passenger in the vehicle, 24-year-old Aaron Pierce, got out of the truck and pulled a gun, police say.
Pierce pointed the gun at Toala, and as the argument escalated, Toala was shot once in the chest, according to police. He died at the scene.
As police responded, Pierce remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Investigators said Sunday they were still unsure what prompted the argument.
Pierce was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of criminal homicide. According to jail records, Pierce told police he fired the weapon intentionally.
A search of Utah State Court records shows no significant criminal history for either man.
