SUNSET — Witnesses estimate that a 2002 GMC Envoy was traveling more than 100 mph when the driver lost control Tuesday near Sunset, causing the vehicle to roll several times.

David A. Solis, 28, of Ogden, and Stephanie M. Mendina-Gomez, 22, also of Ogden, were both ejected from the vehicle and killed, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

A toddler, approximately 2-years old, who was also ejected from the vehicle amazingly suffered only minor injuries, said UHP Sgt. Todd Royce. The child remained hospitalized Wednesday at Primary Children's Hospital. He didn't know the child's relationship with either of the adults who died.

None of the occupants were believed to be wearing seat belts or were properly restrained, Royce said, adding that impairment was also being investigated as a possible factor in the crash.

Investigators were looking at whether Solis was the driver based on evidence collected at the scene.

Solis had a substantial history of drug use, according to court records. He was charged in January in Ogden Justice Court with DUI. A warrant was issued for his arrest April 29 for failing to show up to a mandatory court hearing. On April 7, Solis was charged in Riverdale Justice Court with driving on a suspended license. A warrant in that case was issued Friday.

He was convicted of an amended charge of attempted drug possession in August and of misdemeanor drug possession in April of 2015 and June of 2013, court records state.

In 2007, Solis was convicted of weapons offenses and sentenced to up to five years at the Utah State Prison after violating parole. In 2009, Solis made news for allegedly holding a woman hostage at gunpoint inside a car. He was charged, but the case was later dropped when witnesses failed to cooperate with prosecutors, according to court records.
