Aaron Bushey, of Tahoe City, California, heats metal in a forge at the Artist-Blacksmith's Association of North America conference at the Utah State Fairpark in Salt Lake City on Thursday. The annual event brings together more than 1,000 accomplished blacksmiths from as far away as South Africa for demonstrations, workshops and lectures — as well as the chance to showcase their talents and swap trade secrets. The conference included a slate of demonstrations covering a wide range of styles using tools from hand hammers to forging presses to power hammers; an iron smelt; and copper- and silversmiths.
