Editor's note: In anticipation of the 121st college football season in Utah, DeseretNews.com writer Jay Yeomans is ranking the 50 greatest Division I college football players of all time from the state of Utah. We're counting down the 50 days until Sept. 1 when Southern Utah at Utah and Weber State at Utah State kick off at 6 p.m. Rankings are based on what the player did during his college career.
46. Marv Bateman, Utah, punter/kicker (1969-1971)
Our second of three special teams stars to make the list, Bateman was a legendary punter and kicker during his time at Utah. He was a two time All-WAC performer and a two time All American. His best season came as a senior in 1971 when he was named a first team All American by The Sporting News and Time after he shattered his own NCAA record from the season before by averaging 48.1 on 68 punts.
For his Utah career, he averaged 46.9 yards on 133 punts. He added 21 field goals on his way to 118 points in the kicking game.
No. 48: Utes wide receiver Bryan Rowley
No. 49: Robert Turbin was hard to stop
No. 50: Utah's Tom Hackett was a game-changing punter for the Utes
