Editor's note: In anticipation of the 121st college football season in Utah, DeseretNews.com writer Jay Yeomans is ranking the 50 greatest Division I college football players of all time from the state of Utah. We're counting down the 50 days until Sept. 1 when Southern Utah at Utah and Weber State at Utah State kick off at 6 p.m. Rankings are based on what the player did during his college career.
16. Louie Giammona, Utah State, running back (1973-75)
Giammona was one of the elite running backs to ever play his college football in the state of Utah. After putting up solid numbers during his first year on the field in Logan, he exploded with two of the best years a Utah State back has ever had.
His best season came in 1974 when he carried the Aggies to an 8-3 record, including wins over BYU and Utah. That year, he was a UPI Second-Team All-American after he led the nation in carries (329), rushing yards (1,534) and all-purpose yards (1,984).
For his Aggie career, he totaled 756 carries for 3,499 yards and 21 touchdowns. He was inducted in the USU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
