PARK CITY — A former Park City woman faces criminal charges after police say her roommates discovered the remains of two babies inside a plastic tote.
Molly Frances Jojola, 28, was charged in Park City's 3rd District Court Friday with two counts of abuse or desecration of a human body, a third-degree felony.
The remains were discovered nearly a year ago in September 2015. A former roommate told police she and some friends were cleaning out Jojola's bedroom when they discovered a large container in a closet "that was emitting a horrible odor," charging documents state.
The group "opened a corner of the tote and observed that it appeared to contain human remains," wrote Summit County prosecutor Joy Natale.
Another roommate sent a text message to Jojola asking about the container's contents. "Jojola told (him) that the tote contained the remains of two stillborn babies that she had given birth to in the past," according to the charges.
Prosecutors say an autopsy determined that the heavily decomposed remains were from two full-term babies — one a boy and the other a girl — and DNA tests confirmed that Jojola was the mother of both.
Jojola told detectives she gave birth to the first baby in February of 2012 in Park City and "claimed she was unaware she was even pregnant until she gave birth to the baby in the shower," the charges state. She said the baby was purple, limp, lifeless and wasn't breathing.
The woman said she then bought a grey plastic tote and put the baby's body inside it, Natale said.
Jojola moved into another Park City apartment in September of 2012 and allegedly put the tote into a closet there.
In February of 2014, she said she gave birth to a second stillborn baby in the bathtub, according to charging documents.
"Jojola admitted that she placed the second baby's body in the grey plastic tote with the remains of the first child and then put the tote back in her closet where she concealed it beneath blankets and other items," the charges state.
A summons was issued Friday for Jojola, who is living in California, for her to appear in court in Park City on Sept. 12.
