Benjamin Doyle, an AmeriCorps volunteer working with Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity, shows off a model of the new Field of Dreams energy-efficient affordable housing community during a groundbreaking ceremony in Kearns on Tuesday. Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams joined Ed Blake, executive director of the nonprofit group, and other officials at the project site, a 2-acre abandoned baseball field at 5803 S. 4270 West, to help kick off construction. Habitat for Humanity has partnered with the University of Utah’s School of Architecture for the past 3 ½ years to design superefficient homes that are also affordable. Each of the 20 homes will cost approximately $150,000 to build and $1.50 a day in utility bills. The project should be completed by 2020.
