"31 DAYS TO A BETTER YOU," by Ed J. Pinegar, Covenant Communications, $12.99, 216 pages (nf)
In his recent book, “31 Days to a Better You,” Ed J. Pinegar invites readers to look inward to develop spiritual and temporal improvements that will have eternal rewards, from being happier, calmer or more spiritual to being a more devoted and sincere follower of Jesus Christ
The book is divided into two parts. The first six chapters discuss what Pinegar calls “the six-step growth cycle,” which helps readers on their self-improvement journey toward discipleship.
Those steps include both temporal techniques like setting SMART goals (ones that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-based), and necessary spiritual components of prayer, journaling, scripture study and self-reflection.
The second part of the book is divided into 31 sections, one for each day. Each of the 31 days or chapters has a spiritual topic to study with both temporal and spiritual truths. Daily topics include the Atonement, prayer and tolerance. For each topic, the six-step growth cycle is applied to help readers incorporate the principle more fully in their lives.
Pinegar weaves scriptures, prophetic quotes, anecdotes, and even a popular science-fiction reference to provide counsel and guidance for each of the daily themes.
While a reader could gain a lot from a casual and quick reading of the book, perhaps the best approach would be to enjoy it with an earnest desire to refine oneself and draw closer to the Savior.
Improving in 31 days may be a bold or even audacious goal, but with dedicated and sincere effort, readers can rise to the challenge to find themselves a happier and more peaceful follower of Christ.
Pinegar is author of more than 40 books, has taught at Brigham Young University and the Provo Missionary Training Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has recently served as the Manti Utah Temple president.
