WEST VALLEY CITY — Hale Centre Theatre announced today the lineup for its 2018 season, which will include eight shows as part of its regular season ticket packages and two special engagement productions.
"We've collected the very best possible family genre pieces we possibly can together, and there should be something in there for everyone," said Sally Dietlein, executive producer and co-founder of HCT, in an interview with the Deseret News.
Although the theater is slated to open its first show, "Forever Plaid," in the new Sandy location at 9886 Monroe St. on Sept. 1, the 2018 lineup will be the theater's first full season in the new Mountain America Performing Arts Centre, which includes two stages: the theater-in-the-round Centre Stage and the proscenium thrust Jewel Box Stage.
"We know of the capability of the new stages, and the capability is so much more expanded from everything that we've ever done before that we picked pieces that can showcase not only all of the technology that we're bringing in … but also the stages that we're going to be presenting them in because now we've got a choice," Dietlein said.
Among the season lineup are three Disney musicals — "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "Newsies" and "My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto's Musical Tale" — which Dietlein said will cater to Utah's family-oriented audience and stem from the theater's strong relationship with Music Theater International, the licensing company that carries the Disney works.
"Disney specializes in family," she said. "… (Music Theater International) loves to see those things on our stage because we originate new thinking."
Dietlein said during an event announcing the season to donors and media that the season contains a variety of shows, from classics such as "The Music Man" to a regional premiere of "Tuck Everlasting" to HCT favorite "The Scarlet Pimpernel."
"We've been waiting until we got on the new stage to do 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' again," Dietlein said during the event. "We were able to bring the regional premiere of this in the early 2000s to this valley, and it's sort of become our show."
Also on the schedule are the comedy "Cash on Delivery" and the play "Wait Until Dark," based on the 1967 film starring Audrey Hepburn.
Finishing out the season will be "The Wizard of Oz" on the Centre Stage and "A Christmas Carol" in the Jewel Box Stage as a special engagement.
"We've been waiting for the right venue to bring 'The Wizard of Oz' to you in a way that you will never forget," Dietlein said during the event.
The 2018 season will mark the second time "A Christmas Carol" will be shown on the new proscenium thrust stage, with 2017's production of the show being the first.
"'Christmas Carol' is such an intimate story and to be able to have the seats just cup around that new proscenium thrust and to have the ability to do some backdrop tricks, some things that will engage visually in completely different ways … it's just so fun to give it a new sparkle, even though it's the same story," Dietlein said in an interview.
She added that the 2018 season lineup is a reminder of the type of entertainment HCT is known for providing.
"There is not another theater in the world like it, and it's here in our community," she said. "It really is the heartbeat of Utah."
