Former BYU wide receiver Mitch Mathews was waived by the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, ending two months with the organization.
Mathews was waived in order to make room on the Vikings' 90-man roster for former Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr., who was signed as a safety.
The former Cougar will now be looking to make his fourth NFL team after going undrafted last spring. He signed a rookie free-agent deal with the Kansas City Chiefs following the 2016 NFL draft but was cut by the Chiefs prior to the start of the regular season. He signed with the Cleveland Browns practice squad on Oct. 11 before being released in early November.
Mathews, who played sparingly in the preseason last year, then signed with Minnesota on March 30 and recently attended organized team activities with the Vikings.
With Mathews' release, 18 former BYU players currently dot NFL rosters, as well as 92 with Utah ties. Mathews' news comes on the same day that former University of Utah running back Matt Asiata officially signed with the Detroit Lions after several reports over the weekend reported that Asiata would continue his NFL career in Detroit after five years in Minnesota.
