BRIGHAM CITY — Peach City isn’t the new kid on the block in the local ice cream community.

The drive-in restaurant in Brigham City got its start in 1937 as a small malt shop run by Bill Harris, who used his own family recipes, according to the restaurant’s website.

We gave Peach City a 1 out of 4 scoops.

Over the course of Peach City’s 80-year history, the restaurant has moved locations once, rebranded from an “upscale malt shop” to a drive in and is now on it’s third owner, but through it all, the shop has produced house-made ice cream.

Brigham City’s population continues to grow, but a drive down the city’s Main Street shows that the small-town charm remains, and that’s true for the atmosphere at Peach City too.

Customers can choose to either stay in their car to take advantage of the drive-in service or go inside. From the bar looking directly into the kitchen with vinyl and chrome bar stools to the jukebox blaring to the waiters and waitresses that come to each booth to take orders, Peach City’s ’50s diner feel is still alive and well.

The restaurant serves traditional diner fare such as burgers, hot dogs, fries and grilled cheese, as well as dessert options such as shakes, floats, soft serve and hard ice cream.

The menu lists 20 different hard ice cream flavors, including chocolate chip, cookies and cream, mint Oreo, banana nut and chocolate peanut butter.

The waitress said peach is Peach City’s most popular flavor (of course) and also raved about the chocolate burnt almond, so I got a single scoop of each.

The burnt chocolate almond had maybe three or four almonds in the entire cone, which is not a lot considering the generous portion that comes in a single scoop, and the chocolate also had more of a bitter taste to it.

I was looking forward to the peach cone but ended up being disappointed. The peach flavor was there, but the texture of the ice cream left a lot to be desired. It was grainy and was so soft that it seemed as if it might slide right off the cone with every lick, which was not expected from something said to be hard ice cream.

Perhaps the fact that ice cream is not the only thing Peach City serves causes them to be stretched thin. The day I stopped in, the parking lot was busy with drive-in customers, and almost every booth in the place was full. Whether it was the ice cream, the burgers and fries or the nostalgia that drew people there, however, is unclear.
