The "Book of Mormon" is back.
The musical, that is.
On Aug. 1, the Broadway production will return to Salt Lake City for the second time. The last time the musical was in Utah was in August 2015 at the Capitol Theatre. This year, the production will be at the newly built Eccles Theater.
The musical, which first opened in 2011, has garnered nine Tony Awards, including one for best musical, and a Grammy Award for best musical theater album. The recording of the original Broadway cast also reached No. 3 on the Billboard charts in June 2011, according to the Deseret News. The Chicago Tribune even said the musical is "exquisitely toned" and has "disciplined narrative logic."
But others feel as though the musical's depiction of Mormonism falls flat, or even worse, is offensive and condescending.
Latter-day Saint actor Dallyn Vail Bayles, who has chosen not to see the play, wrote in a column for the Deseret News that some of the things he has heard about the ways the musical depicts The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has turned him off.
"Artistically, you can look at it and say it's a brilliant work of comedy," Bayles wrote. "(But) compounded with the other elements of the musical, the offensive things, and the overall message of the musical, I just choose not to embrace it."
