SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah is phasing in a clear bag policy at all athletic events at Rice-Eccles Stadium and the Huntsman Center this fall.

According to U. Police Chief Dale Brophy, the policy change aims to speed up security checkpoints and protect fans. It comes on the heels of several recent security breaches at venues around the globe.

Enforcement of the policy will not go into effect until July 1, 2018, though fans are encouraged to begin complying immediately.

Each fan may carry one clear bag no larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, or a 1 gallon plastic freezer bag. Small clutches or purses will still be allowed. Diaper bags may also be taken into venues with a child or infant. Seat cushions without pockets or compartments will continue to be allowed as well.

Clear bag policies are a growing trend among many colleges and national sports venues.
