SALT LAKE CITY — A West Valley woman now faces criminal charges after police say she set fire to her ex-boyfriend's car and threatened to have a gang shoot up his house just two days after he broke up with her.
Katia Guadalupe Ontiveros-Nevarez, 20, was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with use of an explosive device, a first-degree felony, and arson, a third-degree felony.
On Sept. 11, 2016, Nevarez's boyfriend broke up with her, police say. The next day, the ex-boyfriend's car was vandalized with red spray paint, according to charging documents.
The day after that, Nevarez sent threatening messages to her ex-boyfriend saying that gang members "would shoot up" his home, the charges state.
Later that day, the ex-boyfriend's aunt was in his house when "she heard a loud bang, looked outside and saw the car her nephew usually drove was on fire," according to the charges. The fire caused more than $2,500 damage.
Investigators determined the fire was started by a molotov cocktail thrown at the vehicle, the charges state.
