SALT LAKE CITY — Police say a 19-year-old man from Roy created a fake Facebook account with a female name to trade pornography for explicit pictures minors took of themselves.
James Wood was booked into Weber County Jail Friday for investigation of 12 counts sexual exploitation of a minor and 10 counts of dealing in materials harmful to a minor, said Roy Police Sgt. Matthew Gwynn. Wood has not been formally charged in court.
Eleven alleged victims have been identified in the case, Gwynn said.
Investigators believe he was using the Facebook account to trade the pictures for a pornographic photo of a woman or girl from December 2016 to February 2017. They aren't sure if the female picture he used on the account is a victim of his or if he got the picture somewhere else, Gwynn said.
Gwynn declined to release the ages or other information about those identified as victims.
On Friday, Gwynn said he urges parents to look through their kids' devices and social networking accounts.
"We want parents to be cognizant of what children are doing online, especially with their tablets and phones," he said.
Police say they want to know if there are other victims in the case and are taking calls through the Roy Police dispatch line: (801)629-8221.
