SALT LAKE CITY — Steve Carell doesn’t watch “The Office.”
What happened: The former “Office” star told Uproxx in a new interview that he doesn’t watch the show because he didn’t expect it to be remembered years later.
- “Yeah, I really didn’t think people would make that connection, but I don’t watch ‘The Office,’” he said. “You know, I mean, it’s something that we did years ago together. You don’t think about it continuing out there and people continuing to think about these characters and their connections. So, yeah, it didn’t really cross my mind. But, man, it was fun to work with her again.”
- He said people probably didn’t realize that he and Amy Ryan, who played Michael Scott’s love interest Holly in “The Office,” also appeared together in “Beautiful Boy.”
Reboot: Carell’s words come as “The Office” has seen an increase in viewership over the last few years. So much so that there’s been talk of NBC rebooting the show.

However: Carell told Esquire he doesn’t think “The Office” should receive a reboot treatment.
- “Because 'The Office' is on Netflix and replaying, a lot more people have seen it recently,” Carell told Esquire. “And I think because of that there’s been a resurgence in interest in the show, and talk about bringing it back. But apart from the fact that I just don’t think that’s a good idea, it might be impossible to do that show today and have people accept it the way it was accepted 10 years ago. The climate’s different.”
- “A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That’s the point, you know? But I just don’t know how that would fly now. There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today — which is good, for sure. But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”
