SALT LAKE CITY — Donovan Mitchell and the Utah Jazz used a dominant second quarter to beat the LeBron James-less Los Angeles Lakers 113-95 on Friday night at Vivint Arena.
Here are four key takeaways from the win that pushed the Jazz back over .500 (22-21) on the year.
— The second-year guard Mitchell was the star of the night, scoring 33 points, his fourth straight game scoring more than 25. He shot 14 of 24 from the field, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range, and also had nine assists, four rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.
Mitchell scored 19 points on 8-of 14-shooting in the first half to go along with four assists, three rebounds and two blocked shots, as well as a posterizing dunk over JaVale McGee in the second quarter.
— Utah went on an 18-4 run during the second quarter to pull away from Los Angeles, as the Lakers missed 14 straight shots from the field at one point in the period. The Jazz outscored the Lakers 30-15 in the second to build a 62-41 halftime lead. Utah outshot Los Angeles 39.6 percent to 35.9 percent for the game and the Jazz hit 15 3-pointers, 10 more than the Lakers.
— Former University of Utah forward Kyle Kuzma had a rough shooting night for the Lakers, two days after scoring a career-high 41 points in a win over Detroit. He was 0 of 8 shooting in the first half with one point and ended the night with 11 points on 4 of 18 shooting, as Los Angeles only had one starter shoot above 35 percent from the field.
— Both teams were missing key players. James was out for the Lakers with a groin injury. The Jazz were down point guards Ricky Rubio (right groin strain), Dante Exum (left ankle sprain) and Raul Neto (left groin strain).
