SALT LAKE CITY — Teen detective Nancy Drew is returning to the big screen, and she’s getting a television show, too.
What’s happening: The Hollywood Reporter announced last Wednesday that The CW has ordered pilots for a new Nancy Drew drama produced by the creators of "The O.C."
- The untitled series will follow an 18-year-old Nancy Drew in the summer after her senior year of high school when a family tragedy keeps her in her hometown and she finds herself entangled in a murder mystery.
- There is no projected release date yet for the series, which is CBS TV Studios’ third attempt at a reboot, according to Hollywood Reporter.
That’s not all: On Jan. 18, Ellen DeGeneres took to Twitter to announce the release of another Nancy Drew reboot, except this one’s a film starring Sophia Lillis of “Sharp Objects” fame.
- The film, titled “Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase,” was produced by DeGeneres and features a skateboarding Nancy tackling her first case.
- Its release date is March 15.
The Nancy Drew character was first introduced to the world in the 1930s by Edward Stratemeyer, who also created the Hardy Boys.
- The stories were written by a series of ghostwriters operating under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene and over 500 Nancy Drew novels have been published to date.
It’s not the first time Nancy Drew has been on the silver screen. Warner Brothers released a Nancy Drew film in 2007 that ultimately didn’t take, getting a 50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer.
- In a season that’s seen dozens of successful reboots, however, 2019 could be Nancy Drew’s time to shine.
