The first few days of 2019 have already seen headlines about Congress, Sen. Mitt Romney's op-ed in the Washington Post and the border wall.
The partial government shutdown carried over into the new year. The debate over funding a border wall continues to divide Congress. More than 800,000 federal workers are going without pay.

Some of the most obvious signs of the shutdown effects have been seen in the national parks, where trash has started to accumulate and facilities are going without maintenance.

New members of Congress were sworn in Thursday. On Tuesday, Mitt Romney wrotean op-ed in the Washington Post that heavily criticizes President Trump's character.

The op-ed has received support and backlash, including a response from Trump on Twitter where he said "I won big and (Romney) didn't. He should be happy for all Republicans."

Thursday's swearing in also marked a shift in majority for the House of Representatives. Democrats voted in Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced an exploratory bid for president through a New Year's Eve video. The move didn't come as a surprise to many, but has spurred the conversation about candidates for the 2020 presidential election.

With 2019 starting out, cartoonists were also keen to put their spin on what the next 12 months may bring.
