Duchess Meghan Markle opened up about motherhood and mental health in a clip from a new documentary that will be released next week, according to the BBC.
Markle became a mother to baby Archie earlier this year, and she admitted it has not always been an easy road.
The documentary, titled “Harry and Meghan: An African Journey,” follows Markle and husband Prince Harry on their recent tour of Africa and features in-depth interviews with both royals, the BBC reported.
Being a new mother is a “struggle,” Markle told ITV’s Tom Bradby, in a clip from the documentary tweeted by ITV on Friday.
Markle has sometimes received rough treatment from the British press since the beginning of her relationship with Prince Harry in 2016, according to The Washington Post.
Bradby asked how the media’s treatment and a life in the spotlight had affected her physical and mental health in the Twitter clip.
“Thank you for asking, because not a lot of people have asked if I’m OK,” Markle told him in the clip.
In her response, Markle acknowledged the challenges that all women face during pregnancy and new motherhood.
“Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging,” Markle said, according to People magazine. “And then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot.”
The media’s attention “on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed” was not easy, according to Markle, per People. “It’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”
Prince Harry has spoken out about his wife’s treatment by the press, comparing it to the way his mother, Princess Diana, faced attacks from the press until her death in 1997, according to The Washington Post.
“I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces,” Harry said recently in a statement, according to the Post.
The duke and duchess have recently filed separate lawsuits against several different British tabloids and papers, BBC reported.
After the release of the clip from the documentary on Friday, people were sharing their support of Markle by tweeting #WeLoveYouMeghan, and the hashtag was trending on Twitter on Friday.
The documentary will air in the United States Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. MT on ABC, according to People.
