If you were taken by surprise when Warner Bros. announced former “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson would be the next Caped Crusader, you weren’t alone.

Pattinson called his casting “kind of insane” in a recent interview with Esquire.

“I was so far away from ever thinking it was a realistic prospect,” Pattinson told Esquire. “I literally do not understand how I’ve got it, at all.”

Warner Bros. made the casting announcement in May, the Deseret News reported at the time.

The decision to cast Pattinson as Batman was leaked even before he had auditioned. He worried this would hurt his chances for the part, the actor revealed in an interview last month with Variety.

Some on social media did not respond kindly to the reports of Pattinson taking on the iconic role, according to the Deseret News.

“To be honest, it was less vitriolic than I was expecting,” Pattinson said, when asked by Variety about the mixed reactions.

He added, “It’s much more fun when you’re an underdog. There’s no expectation of you.”

Matt Reeves will be directing the film, which is scheduled to come to theaters June 25, 2021, according to the Deseret News.
