Elder Ronald A. Rasband offered remarks about the Boy Scouts of America during the second session of the 189th Semiannual General Conference for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  • “Our association with the Boy Scouts of America, as it now concludes, will always be an important legacy to me and the church,” Elder Rasband said, per the Deseret News’ Tad Walch.
  • “To the Scouting organization, to the scores of men and women who have served diligently as Scout leaders, to the moms — real credit goes there, you know — to the young men who have participated in Scouting, we say, ‘Thank you.’”

Flashback: The church announced in May 2018 that it would end its relationship with the BSA on Dec. 31, 2019, as reported by the Deseret News.

  • “In this century of shared experience, the church has grown from a U.S.-centered institution to a worldwide organization, with a majority of its membership living outside the United States,” according to a joint statement between the BSA and the church. “That trend is accelerating. The church has increasingly felt the need to create and implement a uniform youth leadership and development program that serves its members globally. In so doing it will be necessary for the church to discontinue its role as a chartered partner with BSA.”

New program: The church announced a new initiative to replace the Boy Scouts and Personal Progress programs with “Children and Youth,” according to the Deseret News.
