A line of cars passes Utah Department of Transportation crews clearing rubble from summer mudslides in Little Cottonwood Canyon on Monday. Heavy rain in August and September sent walls of water, mud, rocks and large boulders across multiple portions of state Route 210, covering some spots with debris several feet deep. Between now and Thanksgiving, the road will be reduced to one lane, with flaggers controlling traffic both up and down the canyon, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. as the crews remove debris from along the road, and repair adjacent slopes to prevent further slides. Drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes while they wait for traffic to pass. In addition, wide loads over 11 feet are restricted and must contact the project hotline at 855-663-6800 to coordinate access. The project also includes clearing out and repairing or replacing ditches and culverts, and installing three new concrete pipe culverts that are 5 feet in diameter to help channel water under the road. Crews will also replace signs and guardrails damaged in the slide. UDOT officials are asking bikers and pedestrians, who will only be allowed in the canyon between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., to stay away from the construction zone.
