SALT LAKE CITY — Commitment announcements have become creative over the years, with the state of Utah’s top prospect writing somewhat of a new chapter.

During postgame interviews following Orem’s 21-7 win over Timpview in the 5A state championship, Noah Sewell was asked what it read on his gloves. The 5-star prospect then put the gloves together, showing the name “Oregon” stamped on his white gloves, quickly confirming he is committed to sign with the program this coming December.

“Let’s go Ducks. That’s where I’m going,” Sewell said, stating his decision was due to, “The coaches there. My brother’s there and the players there are just like a family.”

Sewell’s older brother is Penei Sewell, who starts along Oregon’s offensive front after signing with the Ducks in 2018.

Noah Sewell owns the distinction of being evaluated as the state of Utah’s first consensus 5-star football prospect since Haloti Ngata, who also went on to sign with Oregon back in 2003 before moving on to a successful NFL career, where he was named to five Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl as a part of the Baltimore Ravens.

Sewell rested on the Ducks just prior to the championship game after “doing a lot of praying and soul-searching. I talked to my parents and then just came up with the decision.”

Those same parents took part in the postgame celebration, with Noah’s mother, Arlene, running to midfield to engage her son in a long and emotional embrace following the game. His father, Gabriel Sewell, is a coach for Orem and also shared tears with his son after what was an emotional end of a truly historic prep career.

“It’s unbelievable and it (went) by fast,” Noah Sewell said.

As for his play in Friday’s win, it was a typical performance, with the 6-foot-2, 266-pound athlete starring at both linebacker and at running back. His numbers included 13 total tackles and a key fumble recovery and 103 yards rushing on just 11 carries.

Of course, 47 of those yards came on a back-breaking touchdown run that gave Orem a 14-0 lead with 8:58 left.

Noah was quick to credit his offensive line for the run, stating, “I’m telling you that you guys gave me too much hype. If you look over there, it’s all them. They put me in the best position and I just capitalize on them.”
