President Donald Trump participated in the annual turkey pardoning with First Lady Melania Trump Tuesday.
At the pardoning, President Trump had to make an important decision: whether to pardon Bread or Butter (the names of the two turkeys).
The two turkeys weigh in at 45 and 47 pounds, respectively, and were raised by farmer Wellie Jackson, according to CNN.
The pair traveled from North Carolina over the weekend and stayed at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel upon their arrival in D.C. They also held a news conference Monday morning before heading to the White House.
While Bread is an avid Bluegrass fan and loves Cheerwine, according to White House tweets, Butter prefers bagpipe music and sweet potato fries.
While Kellyanne Conway, counselor to President Trump, told reporters present at the news conference that she expected both turkeys to be pardoned, President Trump ultimately chose to pardon Butter.
Both turkeys will now be moved to Gobbler’s Rest at Virginia Tech, where they will live out the rest of their lives.
According to Newsweek, the first turkey pardoning took place in 1963 with President John F. Kennedy. While the tradition didn’t catch on at first, turkey pardoning became an official White House event with President George H. W. Bush in 1989.
Now that the turkey pardoning is over, President Trump and his family will head to their Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida where they will spend their Thanksgiving vacation, according to USA Today.
