SMITHFIELD — Sky View enters Friday’s 4A quarterfinal on a roll. The Bobcats have won their last nine games, including a 62-0 drubbing of Cedar Valley in the first round of the playoffs and will look to keep their streak rolling against Mountain View when the two teams meet at 3 p.m. Friday at Sky View High School.
“They’ve got a great team. When you beat someone 62-0 in a playoff game, they’ve got some talent. (Mason) Falslev is a great receiver, their quarterback has been slinging it around, their defense is tough. It’s definitely going to be a tough task to go up there and try and beat them at their own place, but I feel confident our kids are going to go and play to their best abilities and hopefully we can give them a game,” Mountain View head coach Tyler Anderson said.
Sky View, who has a 10-1 record, has a potent offense that averages 36.7 points per game.
The Bobcats are led by quarterback Kason Carlsen, who enters the contest with a 65.5 percent completion percentage and has thrown for 1,535 yards and 24 touchdowns and has just four interceptions. On the ground, Walter Collins has 495 yards and four touchdowns.
On defense, Scout Morris has been a ballhawk, totaling eight interceptions — tied for the most in the state. He leads a defense coming off of a playoff shutout and that allows just 10.6 points per game.
“We use him at multiple spots, which creates a few different opportunities for him. He understands our scheme and puts himself in proper position, regardless of the position he’s playing. He’s just been really solid, he’s a great tackler, he doesn’t make many mistakes from an alignment assignment perspective,” Sky View head coach Chris Howell said.
Howell’s keys to victory include limiting Mountain View’s run game and pass game, getting off the field on third down, sustaining drives, scoring in the red zone and winning the turnover battle.
The visitors is Mountain View, which enters with a 9-2 record is coming off a 35-14 win against Tooele.
“I know that they’re really well-coached. I’ve known Tyler Anderson for a long time and I know the quality of coach he is. It’s reflected in their record,” Howell said. “They’ve obviously had a great year and their quarterback is a really good player. They have a bunch of receivers that can catch the ball and turn it into big plays. Their running back is really good as well. I feel like they do some great things defensively to try and put people in some long yardage situations.”
The Bruins are led by dual-threat quarterback Duce Anderson. Anderson has 2,804 yards and 28 touchdowns passing and 708 yards and nine touchdowns running this season.
“He’s been playing well this year. He almost has 3,000 yards passing and about 800 yards rushing. It’s good to have a quarterback that can run and pass, it’s a good weapon to have,” Anderson said.
On defense, Elwood Afalava has 38 tackles and six sacks to lead the Bruin defense.
To win, Anderson says Mountain View has to be careful with the ball, avoid penalties, win special teams and force turnovers.
