Lower seeds advance

A perfect tournament seeded by computer formula would see the top eight seeds playing in each of the Class 6A, 5A, and 4A quarterfinals this week and the top four in the 3A and 2A semifinals. However, seven lower seeded teams spoiled that — nearly a quarter of the schools still playing.

The biggest jolt came in 5A, where four lower seeds reside. No. 9 Wasatch, No. 10 Timpview, No. 11 Lehi and No. 12 Orem defeated the teams seeded No. 5 through No. 8 last week. All four have a reasonable shot of advancing to the semifinals.

In Class 6A, No. 20 Lone Peak is the sole lower seeded team still alive, but the Knights forfeited five regular-season games, drastically dropping their seeding. Thus, one could argue that the top eight seeds advanced.

Class 4A finds No. 9 Snow Canyon moving on with not much of an “upset” over No. 8 seed Desert Hills last week.

The Class 3A semifinals includes the top three seeds and No. 5 Morgan. However, the Trojans’ win over No. 4 Manti wasn’t too surprising, either.

In Class 2A, the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals, thrilling those teams and their fans — and computer nerds everywhere.

Semifinals and quarterfinalists

In the semifinal round this week, Duchesne competes for the 15th time in 18 years. The Eagles join Beaver and Morgan in making their fifth straight semifinal appearances. But Grantsville hasn’t seen the semis since 2005.

In the larger classifications, Bingham advances to the quarterfinals for the 16th consecutive season, since 2004. That’s an ongoing state record. Timpview is in the quarterfinal round for the 18th time in 20 years, and Lone Peak, for the 16th time in 20 seasons.

Farmington (second season) and Green Canyon (third season) go to the quarterfinals for the first time in their school histories. Provo last made the quarters in 2006, Mountain View in 2007 and Wasatch in 2010.

Tournament wins over consecutive years

With a victory this week, Orem becomes the 19th team to win at least three tournament games over three consecutive seasons. Skyline won at least three playoff contests nine straight times (1995-2003). Two teams, Hurricane (2008-11) and Timpview — twice (2006-09 and 2012-15), captured three tournament wins four times in a row.

Bingham strives to win two playoff games for the eighth straight year, since 2012. Only Skyline, which snared at least two playoff victories 13 years in a row (1993-2005), and Kanab, which won at least two tournament games eight straight years (1981-88), have longer streaks.

Beaver seeks to capture two postseason wins for the fifth consecutive year. Eleven teams, including Beaver itself from 1979-83, have won at least two tourney games over five straight seasons.

“New” coaches still alive

Just two of the 25 schools that made coaching changes this season advanced to the next round this week, but both of their coaches had experience with other teams: Sky View’s Chris Howell, who previously directed Ridgeline from 2016-18 and Stansbury’s Eric Alder, who was at Ben Lomond from 2014-18.

Farmington enjoys the biggest turnaround of 2019, improving 7.5 games from 2-9 in its inaugural season to 9-1 this year. (The NCAA calculates this by taking the difference in victories and the difference in losses, adding the two numbers and dividing by 2.)

A Lehi victory rewards the Pioneers with their sixth 10-win campaign (in 98 seasons) and first since 2017.

Current winning streaks: Farmington — 3, Lehi — 4.
