In anticipation of the gift-giving season, Peloton released an ad promoting its indoor bike, but the ad has since been widely criticized online.
The ad opens with a mother walking into her living room Christmas morning with her young daughter in tow. She will soon uncover her eyes to find the gift of her dreams: a Peloton.
The ad then shows a compilation the woman has made of herself riding the stationary bike throughout the year following that Christmas.
While she seems to have remained relatively the same, the woman happily remarks, “A year ago, I didn’t realize how much this would change me.”
Many people are unhappy with the commercial because they feel that it is sexist, as they view it as the husband telling his wife to lose weight, according to The New York Times.
Twitter users shared their discomfort over the ad, with many commenting their surprise that the couple was still together at the end of the commercial.
Others have likened the woman’s appearance to an image from the film “Get Out.”
Peloton’s share dropped by 9% on Tuesday, according to Business Insider. This caused the company’s market value to drop by almost $942 million.
