A massive volcanic eruption occurred in New Zealand Monday morning, killing five people and leaving dozens missing, The Associated Press reports.
Police officials deemed the area too dangerous to investigate yet, which still leaves questions about the whereabouts of many missing people. Police Deputy Commissioner John Tims told The Associated Press that the number of missing people is in the double digits.
Michael Schade, who works on the engineering team at Stripe, tweeted a slew of videos from near the island. Schade had been visiting White Island but left 20 minutes before the eruption. He said his family was waiting for a boat when they noticed the eruption.
“Boat ride home tending to people our boat rescued was indescribable,” he tweeted.
Schade shared a number of videos from the eruption, too.
Another clip circulating the internet shows passengers crying out during the eruption, according to the New York Post.
The plumes of ash and smoke covered 1.25 square miles of White Island.
