BEAR RIVER CITY, Box Elder County — A man was severely burned Wednesday in an equipment explosion in Box Elder County.

About 6 p.m., the 39-year-old man was cutting a piece of equipment using a plasma cutter at S&M Diesel Service, 3585 W. 5000 North in Bear River City, when the cutter "came in contact with some sort of fuel tank, which exploded," Box Elder County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Dale Ward said.

The man was "alert and talking" to people on scene after the incident, Ward said. He did not have an update on his condition.

The explosion also ignited the building, according to Ward. Crews remained on scene into the evening fighting the fire.

The large building, made of steel construction, suffered "significant" damage within an hour after the blaze began, he said.
