SALT LAKE CITY — Paramount has released the first trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog,” but the fan reaction probably isn’t quite what the producers would expect.

The trailer for the Sega video game adaptation, which was posted to YouTube this morning, shows police officer Tom Wachowski (played by James Marsden) meeting the titular blue hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz), Variety reports. Jim Carrey also stars as Dr. Robotnik, a mad scientist called in by the government to capture Sonic.

The trailer can be viewed below via the film’s Twitter account.

According to the trailer’s YouTube description, the movie “follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth.”

Other moments from the trailer include Sonic stretching to “Gangsta’s Paradise” and a look at his classic spin dash. Judging by the wording in the trailer, the film looks to be an origin story of sorts for the character.

The film’s Twitter account also shared a brand new poster, which shows Sonic running on the side of a building away from a group of missiles. The poster also confirms a Nov. 8 release date for this year.

Reaction to the film’s first look appears to be mildly interested at best and confused at worst.

The Deseret News previously reported that the first look at Carrey in costume had leaked. The trailer confirms the look and offers another take on the villain — one with his traditional bald head, giant mustache and goggles.
