I belong to an organization favoring gun regulations and not one member has ever favored taking guns away from responsible gun owners. Our primary goal is promoting gun regulations that save lives. Certainly differences exist between Democrats and Republicans on gun issues but there are also significant areas of agreement.
According to a national Pew Research Center survey, there is zero difference between Republicans and Democrats on a regulation preventing the mentally ill from obtaining a gun. And only a 3 percent difference for banning gun sales to individuals on a no-fly list. Background checks for all gun sales is favored by huge majorities in both parties as is banning assault style weapons and requiring a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
The main reason these regulations are not laws is because Republican legislators fight against them. We know gun regulations work. States with the most gun regulations (Massachusetts, Connecticut) have much lower gun homicide and suicide rates.
