PROVO — SportsCenter may need to keep BYU on speed dial.
For the second straight week to open the 2015 season, the Cougars turned in an unforgettable finish. This time, the victim was No. 20 Boise State.
The Cougars scored two touchdowns 15 seconds apart in the final minute, turning a three-point deficit into an 11-point victory, 35-24 over No. 20 Boise State on Saturday night at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Facing a fourth-and-7 at the Bronco 35 and trailing 24-21, BYU turned to its freshman quarterback, Tanner Mangum, to make a game-saving play. After rolling right, he threw to the middle of the end zone where the team's shortest wide receiver, 5-foot-10 Mitchell Juergens, made a diving catch for the 35-yard touchdown, giving the Cougars a 28-24 lead with 45 seconds remaining.
On the ensuing drive, safety Kai Nucua intercepted his third pass of the night at midfield, then cut back upfield for a game-sealing 50-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left on the clock.
Combined with the Cougars' 33-28 victory over Nebraska in Week One, capped by a 42-yard Hail Mary toss from Mangum to Mitch Mathews on the game's final play, BYU stands at 2-0 on the season.
