BYU pulled out another amazing last-minute upset over a quality opponent, and it's only the second week of the 2015 season.
The Cougar offense looked shaky at times in Tanner Mangum's first start, but the freshman delivered again in dramatic fashion. However, the defense certainly did its part in this big win over the Broncos, particularly as it forced three turnovers. Here's BYU's grades for its 35-24 win over Boise State
Quarterback
Mangum made some freshman mistakes in his first start, but once again he was clutch in this game. Mangum missed a couple of reads and mishandled some snaps, but he made some plays that most experienced quarterbacks only dream of.
Mangum finished 17 for 28 for 309 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions with one rushing touchdown on a quarterback sneak. Some plays it's obvious he's a freshman, while others he looks like a mixture of Max Hall and John Beck. It's incredible what he's been able to do with all that pressure.
Grade: B+
Running backs
Well, it's safe to say that Adam Hine will be BYU's feature back based on his performance Saturday night. He finished with 93 yards on 19 carries and one nice 21-yard touchdown run.
However, the rest of BYU's running game was less than stellar. Algernon Brown and Nate Carter combined for just 24 yards rushing on seven carries. It was better than last week at Nebraska, but the running backs still have a lot of work to do.
Grade: C
Wide receivers
Last week, it was Mitch Mathews with the heroic game-winning touchdown catch. This week, Mitchell Juergens made an incredible grab in the end zone to put the Cougars ahead for good over the Broncos. Juergens had four grabs on the day for 172 yards and two touchdowns, including an 84-yard bomb on the first drive of the game.
Devon Blackmon also had a good game with six catches for 105 yards. Mathews had five catches for 32 yards. However, Nick Kurtz didn't make a catch on Saturday.
Grade: B+
Offensive line
Once again, the offensive line did a good job giving Mangum time to throw. However, the line also struggled to open up running lanes for the running backs. Still, it was encouraging to see a second game with no false start penalties. Another good performance for the big men in the trenches.
Grade: B
Front seven
It was good to see the return of the BYU pass rush after it was absent for much of last season. Harvey Langi picked up two sacks on the night, while Manoa Pikula added one of his own. While Jeremy McNichols had some good runs against the BYU defense, the Cougars held the Broncos to just 64 yards rushing.
Grade: A-
Secondary
It was a solid example of the bend but don't break defense Bronco Mendenhall is known for. Kai Nacua made a hat trick of interceptions, including a pick-six that put the game out of reach for Boise State. While the BYU secondary did give up a few big plays, it did its part in stopping the Broncos at critical moments late in the game.
Grade: A-
Coaching
It isn't easy to adapt an offense centered around one quarterback only to have to fit it to a completely different style of quarterback after just one week. There's still plenty of work to do, but BYU's coaching staff has done a fantastic job in getting the team to adapt to the loss of Taysom Hill.
Grade: A-
Overall
BYU has two solid come-from-behind victories already in 2015. The Cougars made mistakes, but the team came together in the fourth quarter to pull off an impressive upset over a ranked team in front of a packed LaVell Edwards Stadium.
