SALT LAKE CITY — They have a good relationship now — as was made clear in a recent Los Angeles Times feature — but Taysom Hill laughs about the first time he got a text from Steve Young.
The world’s most popular third-string quarterback shared a funny story with Saints reporters about that interaction, which happened after good BYU win. In the aftermath of a good performance, one of the congratulatory texts he received was from an anonymous number.
“I didn’t have it saved and I didn’t know who it was, so I was just like ‘Ah, I don’t know what to really say because I don’t know who it is,’” Hill recalled. “A few weeks go by and I got another message and it was signed off as ’Steve.’ I quickly realized that it was Steve Young.”
It’s safe to assume Young’s contact info has been saved in Hill’s phone now.
“Steve’s been one of those guys that the connection to BYU is strong,” Hill said. “He’s been a guy that’s been really good about reaching out and offering advice to guys who’ve played at the program, and I wasn’t an exception to that.”
They’ve had plenty of conversations since the first time Hill left Young hanging.
“He’s a guy I really look up to and appreciate his mentorship,” Hill said.
In that Times feature that came out earlier this week — at the same time as the Saints’ do-it-all quarterback impressively led his team to a comeback win — Young credited Hill for being “relentless like few are” and called him “an amazing athlete.” The former BYU star can make things happen by scrambling so there have been obvious comparisons between the two.
Young likes that.
“I’ll own that comparison, I’ll own it 100%,” Young told the Times. “I hope to be like Taysom Hill someday.”
