“The Goldfinch” might have just had one of the worst opening weekends in box office history, according to Business Insider.
It opened last weekend on 2,542 movie screens across the country, according to The Independent, and earned $2.6 million — which gives it the sixth-worst opening of all time among films that opened in more than 2,500 theaters, and also the worst opening weekend of the year so far for films in that category, reports Business Insider.
The film, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Donna Tartt, had been panned by critics before its release, with The Washington Post calling it “overstuffed, overlong, and utterly uninvolving.”
Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios co-financed the film, which cost $45 million to produce, according to Billboard
“The Goldfinch” tells the story of a young boy who survives a terrorist attack at an art museum. The story follows him into adulthood, centering around a painting that he discovers in the aftermath of the attack.
Despite having big names in the cast, including Nicole Kidman, Luke Wilson and Sarah Paulson, according to The Independent, the film was not able to avoid negative reviews.
A review published by the Deseret News claims, “‘The Goldfinch’ falls surprisingly short.” The film has a 25% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, according to Business Insider.
