Oprah Winfrey shared big news for her book club Monday, releasing a new book selection as well as plans for a series with Apple TV Plus.
The series will be called “Oprah’s Book Club,” and will feature Winfrey interviewing authors of her book club picks, CNN reported.
The first author to be featured is Ta-Nehisi Coates, whose debut novel “The Water Dancer” is her latest book selection, according to CBS News.
Coates is an award-winning author known for his autobiography, “Between the World and Me,” and his essay “The Case for Reparations,” CBS News reported. “The Water Dancer” is billed as science fiction by the publisher, who calls it “a boldly conjured debut novel about a magical gift, a devastating loss and an underground war for freedom.”
Winfrey called the novel “one of the best books I have ever read,” according to CBS.
“I was enthralled, I was devastated. I felt hope, I felt gratitude, I felt joy — I mean, it’s the range of emotions,” Winfrey told CBS of her experience reading the novel. “That’s why I think it has everything that a novel is supposed to (have).”
Winfrey will interview Coates for the “Oprah’s Book Club” series in front of a live audience in Washington, D.C., next month, according to CNN.
“I am who I am today because of the experience of learning to read at an early age. Reading opened up a whole world for me beyond the red dirt road and my grandmother’s porch in Mississippi,” said Winfrey in a press release from Apple on Monday. “I want to do that for everybody. And the opportunity to do this with Apple, to speak to people all over the world about the pleasures, the excitement, the tension, the drama that a good book can bring you … I don’t know what’s better than that.”
Apple has announced that for every Oprah’s Book Club book that is sold through Apple Books, they will contribute to the American Library Association, CNN reported.
“Oprah’s Book Club” will be available exclusively on Apple TV Plus and the first installment will be released on Nov. 1, according to CNN.
