House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Tuesday that the House of Representatives will begin an impeach inquiry into President Donald Trump. But new polls reveal that the majority of Americans don’t really support the idea of removing Trump from office.

A new Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday revealed 37% of voters say Trump should be impeached and removed from office. But 57% say he should not be impeached.

  • The poll was conducted from Thursday through Monday — before Pelosi’s call for impeachment, but after reports surfaced about Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In the call, Trump asked Zelensky to investigate Hunter Biden, son of former Vice President Joe Biden, according to The Washington Post.

A Politico/Morning Consult poll found 36% of respondents say they believed Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against Trump. Support for impeachment dropped from 37% last week.

  • The poll was conducted from Friday through Sunday of last weekend as reports surfaced of the Trump-Ukraine call.
  • “Despite being a popular topic in the news, support for impeachment proceedings remains relatively unchanged in the past week,” said Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult’s vice president. “This week, 36 percent of registered voters, including 33 percent of independents and 5 percent of Republicans, support impeachment. These numbers have remained steady over the summer, with little impact from the latest whistleblower complaint centered on Ukraine so far.”
