Gypsy, a white German shepherd, gave birth to eight puppies on Friday, Jan. 10, but one of them had a unique appearance.
The puppy, named Hulk, was lime green when he was born.
“I started freaking out because it was green,” Gypsy’s owner, Shana Stamey, told WLOS-TV.
But Stamey said all the other puppies were doing well and realized they were all healthy. which calmed her worries.
For now, Hulk the puppy will be staying with the Stamey family in their Canton, North Carolina, home, reports WLOS-TV.
The family is searching for a loving family to adopt him when he’s old enough to leave his mom. He likely won’t be green anymore by that time, Stamey told ABC News. In fact, his color has already faded to more of a neon yellow.
The new color change has the family, who occasionally refers to Hulk as Mr. Green, considering renaming him to Pikachu.
We’ve seen this before. In 2017, there was a different, grass green puppy who made headlines — a golden retriever named Forest, according to CNN.
Puppy fur can be dyed green in the womb when biliverdin, the body chemical that turns bruises green, gets into a puppy’s amniotic sac, CNN reports.
ABC News reports the green color also be a result of when too much meconium, which is pre-birth waste from an infant, builds up around the puppy, but it does not harm them.
