Amid the horror of the fires in Australia and the bleak but unsurprising news that our most recent decade was the hottest in recorded history, it has been encouraging to hear Republicans in Congress seriously discussing climate solutions.
I hope they pursue actions that match the scale of the problem. Some suggest we spur innovation and pursue exciting new technologies. These are indeed good ideas, but they can’t do the job alone. Imagine a laboratory hailing a huge breakthrough. It still has to be proven, commercialized and deployed on a massive scale. That will take two decades or more. We can’t wait this long.
The Deseret News amplified voices calling for a carbon tax. This is spot on. There is so much we can do to reduce our carbon emissions today; we just need the proper catalyst to spur families and businesses to take their own sensible actions.
A well-designed scheme will not only dramatically reduce carbon emissions, but will also be equitable, boost the economy, clean our air and yes, spur innovation. The Energy Innovation Act, HR763, fulfills these requirements beautifully. Ask Congress to support this bill today.
