With a very good freshman class, there is optimism that the University of Utah basketball program has a bright future.

Prognosticators aren’t as bullish on the Utes’ present, however.

The Pac-12 media preseason poll was released Thursday morning, and Utah was picked to finish eighth in the conference this season. The UCLA Bruins were picked to win it.

Last season, the Utes finished in a three-way tie for sixth with a 7-11 mark in conference play.

On a brighter note, junior Timmy Allen was one of 10 players picked for the all-conference first team. He garnered second-team honors at the end of last season after averaging 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
