Thousands of Disneyland fans signed a petition this week for the company to reconsider reopening its theme park amid the coronavirus pandemic.
What happened:
- Disney announced Wednesday that it plans to reopen Disneyland and Disney California Adventure on July 17, as I reported for the Deseret News.
- The reopening would come with physical distancing and other operational changes to help people stay safe from the COVID-19 outbreak.
- Similarly, Disney said it plans to reopen Downtown Disney on July 9, and some resort and hotels on July 23.
- The plans are contingent on local and state government approval.
How fans reacted
- Fans have signed a new Change.org petition that calls on Disney to not reopen Disneyland until later in the year.
- The petition reads: “Many people have lost loved ones due to this pandemic and by reopening the parks they are endangering cast members and guests to be exposed to COVID-19.”
- “The solution would be to reschedule Disneyland to reopen the parks at a later date when cases of Covid-19 drop and Health Officials state it is safer for everyone but to still practice social distancing.”
- The petition notes a second wave could cause COVID-19 problems, too.
- The petition had 11,000 signatures as of Thursday.
