The film centers around Max Mercer, who is left home alone when his family travels to Japan for the holidays. Just as he’s getting used to life alone, a married couple tries to steal an heirloom from the Mercer home. So Max — just like Kevin McCallister before him — has to protect his home.
Of course, the major difference is that this film appears to be a British retelling of “Home Alone.” Literally, it’s “Home Alone” but British.
The new movie is less of a reboot and sort of a soft sequel to the original. In fact, the trailer reveals that one of the police officers has a “McCallister” nametag. And, from a brief moment, it appears that McCallister is Buzz, the bully older brother of Kevin McCallister.
“Home Sweet Home Alone” stars Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, Archie Yates, Aisling Bea, Kenan Thompson, Tim Simons, Pete Holmes, Devin Ratray, Ally Maki and Chris Parnell.
The film will be released on Disney+ on Nov. 12, 2021, which is also Disney+ Day.
Rumors of a “Home Alone” reboot began in 2019 when Disney bought 21st Century Fox, as I wrote for the Deseret News. The purchase gave Disney the rights to the “Home Alone” franchise, which inspired the company to create a new version of the film.
