The child tax credit payments continue to float into family bank accounts across the country. But Sen. Joe Manchin D-W.Va., may want the government to make some changes to the payments.

Per Axios, Manchin has reportedly told the White House that there should be two major requirements for the child tax credit payments in the new Democrats’ multitrillion-dollar reconciliation bill:

  • An “established work” requirement that shows people who receive the payments are working.
  • A family income limit near $60,000

Meeting these requirements would make it easier for Manchin to support the package, according to Axios.

  • These two changes “would dramatically weaken one of President Biden’s signature programs to help working families,” but it “would reduce the package’s overall costs,” according to Axios.

Democrats are trying to rally all their party members to support a $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package that would “expand education, health care and child care support, tackle the climate crisis and make further investments in infrastructure,” according to CNN. The bill is the centerpiece of Biden’s agenda.

  • One of the core elements of the bill centers around providing more help for working families, according to CNN. And that includes the child tax credit payments.

American families received their fourth round of child tax credit payments last Friday. The Biden administration included the child tax credit payments in the American Rescue Plan — the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill that passed by Congress in March 2021.

  • Families receive $3,000 per child for children ages 6 through 17, and $3,600 per child for children under 6.
  • Half of that money is distributed through monthly checks from July through December. Per CBS News, the rest will be claimed when filing taxes in 2021.
